Review: ‘Sour’ by Olivia Rodrigo

Hey everyone! Welcome to my first album review of June. Today I’ll be reviewing the brand new debut studio album of Olivia Rodrigo- Sour, released on May 21, 2020. Sour has 11 songs in total and I’m going to review all of them in this post. And we all know how big a hit Drivers License was, so I’m quite excited to listen to Olivia’s full album. I also loved the way she explained her debut album…

She said the album explores her perils and discoveries as a 17-year-old, with its title referring to the “sour” emotions young women experience but are often criticized for, such as anger, jealousy and unhappiness.

brutal

I don’t usually listen to rock music, so I can’t say I liked it a lot. But yes, it is good and kinda reminded me of the guest post by Pavithra- The Dark Side Of Being A Teenager. I liked these lyrics of the chorus…

They say these are the golden years
But I wish I could disappear
Ego crush is so severe
God, it’s brutal out here

traitor

I really like this song, and kinda gave me the vibes Drivers License did. While listening to this song I was expecting a pleasant high note and Olivia’s lovely notes in the last chorus really satisfied me. My favorite part is the pre-chorus, which says…

And ain’t it funny
How you ran to her
The second that we called it quits? And ain’t it funny
How you said you were friends?
Now it sure as hell don’t look like it

drivers license

At first, I really didn’t like this song but now, it’s one of my favorite songs of 2021. I love sad songs a lot and this one is really very beautiful. I especially liked the concept a lot. And what to say about the Bridge, one of my favorites ever…

Red lights, stop signs
I still see your face in the white cars, front yards
Can’t drive past the places we used to go to
‘Cause I still fuckin’ love you, babe (ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)
Sidewalks we crossed
I still hear your voice in the traffic, we’re laughing
Over all the noise
God, I’m so blue, know we’re through
But I still fuckin’ love you, babe (ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh)

1 step forward 3 steps back

This song has a slight interpolation of Taylor Swift’s song ‘New Year’s Day’ and I love both of the songs. 1 step forward 3 steps back is a heartbreaking song that is very pleasant to years. And the chorus is just too beautiful…

Instead it’s one step forward and three steps back
And I’d leave you, but the roller coaster is all I’ve ever had
Yeah, it’s one step forward and three steps back
Do you love me, want me, hate me? Boy
I don’t understand
No, I don’t understand

deja vu

Woo!!! Olivia showing pity towards her Ex’s new girlfriend that she’s not experiencing something special, it’s all fake and he’s a traitor and it has all happened to her once. Loved the lyrics! And the music after the chorus is really unique and gives nostalgic vibes which I like a lot. My favorite part is the Pre-chorus…

So when you gonna tell her that we did that, too?
She thinks it’s special, but it’s all reused
That was our place, I found it first
I made the jokes you tell to her when she’s with you

good 4 u

Oh I’m loving it a lot!! Well, as I told you I don’t listen to rock that much only sometimes but this one is really nice. Olivia looks cool and angry in the music video and that’s so perfect for a song like this, it’s crazy. And I loved the every single lyric of this song, you should definitely listen to it!

enough for you

From all the songs of Sour I’ve listened to yet, this one is my favorite. It’s heartbreaking and just… heart-touching. I can’t choose which part I liked the most because the whole song hits different. It’s a must-listen.

happier

It’s such a deep song, I loved it a lot! Her vocals are so beautiful and sweet. The lyrics say everything! She’s such a great song-writer.

I hope you’re happy, but not like how you were with me

I’m selfish, I know, I can’t let you go

So find someone great but don’t find no one better

I hope you’re happy, I wish you all the best, really

Say you love her, baby, just not like you loved me

And think of me fondly when your hands are on her

I hope you’re happy, but don’t be happier

jealousy, jealousy

I think it could be a little better, but I loved the meaning behind it and also the way Olivia described the track- “In this time period, I was super obsessed with social media. I would look for things that would hurt my feelings all the time and compare myself to everyone. I felt like my life was only what I showed to others. I didn’t feel like my life was any deeper than my Instagram feed. That’s a really troubling mindset to be in as a teenager. And so I guess I wanted to write a song about that. It isn’t sad or “Oh, I don’t feel like I’m enough,” it’s “Oh, God, I’m so jealous.” It’s tongue-in-cheek, and a little funny to me. But the sonics on the song are the reason why we put it on the record.”

favorite crime

One more nice song! In ‘favorite crime’, Olivia sings about how she is partly responsible for her heartbreak because she let her treated badly and it’s also about moving on from a relationship.

Know that I loved you so bad
I let you treat me like that
I was your willing accomplice, honey

And I watched as you fled the scene
Doe-eyed as you buried me
One heart broke, four hands bloody

hope ur okay

A song for her friends, it’s so special. I love the stories this one tells but still I think it could be better because it’s really a beautiful song. My favorite part is Verse 2 as the lyrics are so special…

My middle school friend grew up alone
She raised her brothers on her own
Her parents hated who she loved
She couldn’t wait to go to college
She was tired ’cause she was brought
Into a world where family was merely blood

Does she know how proud I am she was created
With the courage to unlearn all of their hatred
We don’t talk much but I just gotta say
“I miss you, and I hope that you’re okay”

My thoughts…

⭐4.3 out of 5

Favorite song: enough for you

Favorite lyrics: happier

Loved it!!! Most of the songs are about love, heartbreaks and how to move on. There are some songs that I really, I mean really loved a lot and also some that I think could be better, but as it’s her debut album, I’m really proud of her to make such amazing tracks. And all the music videos were also very nice, loved them. So overall, Sour was great!

  1. Ahh I’ve been listening to Sour so much recently 🙈
I love your review! My faves from the album are Driver’s License and Brutal – which surprised me, because I usually don’t really like more rock-ish pop songs like Brutal. 🤷‍♀️

  3. Finally!!! Sour is one of the best debut album in history 💜💜
I had a lot of expectations before releasing but god, she nailed it!! All tracks are so unique and good in her own way. Being a huge fan of her from the beginning, this album was like a perfect treat. Within one album, we got to see different sides of her and experience different emotions. Even one song was not similar like others. My favorite song is deja vu and good for you.

      1. Ok sorry.
I have only heard about 3 artists cuss in songs. I dont like that it is common now.
I heard part of a song wwhere every other word almost was the “f” or “a” or “s” word!!!
        It was terrible!

  4. I really liked this review! It was concise and to the point yet still told me everything that I needed to know. I’d only heard Driver’s Liscence and Deja Vu but I REALLY liked them and instantly added them to my playlist. Based on your review, I think that there are other songs that I should try to.

  6. Hi there! This is kind of off topic but I need some help from an established blog. Is it tough to set up your own blog? I’m not very techincal but I can figure things out pretty fast. I’m thinking about setting up my own but I’m not sure where to start. Do you have any points or suggestions? Appreciate it
