Things My First Six Months of College Life Taught Me

High school graduation opens up a number of ways that all seem to shine so bright that we students can’t even clearly see where these roads will lead us.

“There are two types of people in the world – those who have it clear what are they gonna do or what they want to do, and those whose minds are blank, who literally don’t have an idea of what’s going on.”

These were my thoughts when I passed out 12th grade and of course, I belonged to that ‘lost souls’ group. That blank mind of mine felt extremely heavy as it was filled with noises and a few voices of my own with a wall trying to block them. Somehow the noises seem to be much stronger.

However, in the end, I was able to find something that suited me the best at the moment and started off my college life with new people, new experiences and lessons waiting for me.

(P.S.- I actually started writing this post a few months ago so the current situation is that I’m gonna complete my 2nd semester in a few months.)

Here’s what my first six months of college life taught me…

There will be friends

On graduating high school, this thought that I have to go my own way now was totally eating me up, especially on our last day of school. I had a fine group of friends in school and it always made me feel right at home. Even though I can’t say we were like super close because I never fully opened up to them, but itwas okay, we were friends and that’s all that mattered.

When my uni life started, I felt the way that it was not going to be easy. On my first day of college, I saw that my new classmates were already getting along very well with each other. I couldn’t. “What if they’re not interested? What if I’m just disturbing them?” These thoughts always make it hard for me to talk to someone. But in a few days, I realized that I’m not walking alone. It was a new start for all of us.

It’s crazy how a small gesture like a little smile and eye contact can make you feel at ease and comfortable. Eventually, we adjusted ourselves to the new environment and I also met the people who would make me feel right at home, just like my friends did throughout my school life.

You don’t have to hide yourself

Embrace who you are. We sometimes want to hide ourselves from the people around us because we don’t want them to judge us, we’re afraid of being left out, of being alone. I always feel that way. In school, I would hardly talk about my interests, what kind of songs I like, or about my blog. It was the main reason why my friends didn’t know me so well, I never gave them a chance to do so. Though I don’t really regret it because I did what I felt was right, what made me comfortable. I just wanted to keep my online and offline life away from each other so I kept my online profiles hidden from everyone except my family until I passed out 12th grade.

Eventually, I realized that I didn’t really have to do that. Deep inside I always wanted my friends to know me better than anyone, whenever I would post something I wanted them to see it, to read it. I realized that I will be the same girl whether I talk to the world in person or through a digital screen. My interests, what I do, what I like… these things make me who I am, so why do I have to hide myself.

Today all my friends are aware of this blog and this makes me so happy.

You’re the most important person in your life

You’re a beautiful soul for caring for others and giving importance to those around you. But never forget to take a moment and think about what makes you happy, not what others want to see in you, but what actually brings peace to your mind. For me, the answer is ‘being myself’. People will always give you advice and tell you how you should be, and truly some of that advice might be actually good for you because there are people who want only the best things to come your way. But when I think about it again, is the ‘best’ thing always the ‘right’ thing?

What’s the best song you’ve listened to this year? For you, it might be the latest release of your favorite rock band, for your friend it might be a jazz track. Now how do we decide which song is the best? It’s a very familiar situation for students when we can’t decide what to do. Each way has been titled ‘the best’ by the person who’s showing it to you but the truth is that there might be something better waiting for you than that best. And that ‘better’ is what YOU wish to do. Listen to your heart and guide your own way that leads to your dream destination.

Even if you don’t know where you want to go yet, just keep swimming and follow your heart. And remember…

…you never walk alone

So that’s all for today. I really appreciate you giving your precious time to read this post. After writing it all I feel so good. Thanks for reading!

I’m also a first-year college student and next month I will in my second year. I totally understand what you were going through. It’s a mix of excitement and uncertainty when we begin our college life. I applaud you for embracing who you are and allowing your friends to know the real you. It takes courage to open up and share your interests and passions. I’m glad that you’ve found a supportive group of friends who make you feel at home.

        You are most welcome, Poorwa!

And yes, I absolutely love the anime Demon Slayer! The animation, visual effects, and storyline are on another level.

Which is your favorite anime? As for my favorite anime, it has to be Attack on Titan. Demon Slayer holds the second spot on my list of favorite anime.

I agree with you about Death Note. It was one of the first anime series I watched and it got me into anime.

I haven’t seen My Hero Academia yet.

Oh, it’s awesome that it was your first anime too! Our anime preferences seem to align perfectly, haha.

I’ll definitely make sure to watch My Hero Academia next. Currently, I’m hooked on Steins Gate.

As for Attack on Titan, I completely agree with you. The suspense, thrill, and epic storyline make it truly exceptional.

When it comes to anime movies, I don’t watch them as often, but my absolute favorite has to be Demon Slayer: The Mugen Train. Which anime movie is your personal favorite?

Loved this post!! I kept my online (blog acc) and offline life separately for the same reason. But sometimes being vulnerable with your friends helps you to reach and connect with them on a personal level. I understood this after joining pg.

Yeah I remember, you talked about that in one of your old posts. You know I was redesigning my blog and stumbled upon those chats in the comment section where we would always be so surprised to see how alike we are ❤️

So insightful! I realise I’ve found myself having these exact same thoughts each time I start something new. When I started highschool, it was completely a different set of students and on the first day I forced myself to be outgoing and talkative lol. It was weird. I almost couldn’t get used to my sudden “extroverted” self.
Then I decided just to be who I am and my friendships have changed, broken and made with a vast number of people, and it’s beautiful how it made me realise so much and change so much. Honestly, the people we surround ourselves with determines our whole vibe I guess..
Thanks to you Poorwa for these raw thoughts and feelings you put here, reminds us that we’re not alone in this❤️

Yes we all go through that at some point. I think the more we try to be what we are not the harder it gets to embrace our own personality again. Being yourself will bring those around you who will understand you better than anyone else❤️

      Thanks for reading!💖

Very beautiful post, Poorwa. ✨ For many people, the choice to “be yourself” is so simple, yet so difficult, depending on the situation. However, like you, being myself is what truly brings peace to my mind too, no matter who I am dealing with in my surroundings. And ultimately, I agree with you that being ourselves is what truly attracts the right people to come into our lives who fully understand us and make us feel right at home. Overall, your post served as a great reminder and a helpful “reality-check” about college life, Poorwa. Thank you, and I wish you the best few months of your 2nd semester, and a fruitful college life! 🙏❤️

Yes I agree. Being ourselves is definitely not easy as it may sound because we’re born in a society where you are judged at every point. But it is true that once we have found our way there will be people who will stand by our side and appreciate us for who we are ❤️

Your comment made my day, Selene 💞 tqsm!!

This was such a beautiful post ❤️ I’m so happy that you’ve been able to find friends and feel more comfortable being who you are around them. I still rarely tell people I know in real life about my blog, you’re very brave for doing that. You’ll definitely look back on these life lessons and this fulfilling time later on with happiness. I never went to college and therefore have very few friends offline.
