Books I read in 2024 | Did I achieve my reading goals?

I might be a little late to this since most people already posted their annual bookish wrap-ups around January 1st (and why does it feels like it’s already been a month since then?), but as someone once said “better late than never”, here I am! Well, to be honest, after all the reading I did last year there was no chance I would let this post slide knowing how reading was one of the top three things that got me through the year.

I read a total of 32 books in 2024 and that’s quite a number for me because it was definitely the first time I was so into reading that I picked one book after another and just couldn’t stop. I remember it was around 12 books in 2023 and basically none before that, so yeah I was very much thrilled when I learned that I read over 30 books in a year.

Here’s an overview…

January | Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – J.K. Rowling

It all started with me getting obsessed all over again with the HP series and rereading the books. I was surprised by how many details I hadn’t noticed when I first read the series years ago and that’s all that led me to preferring books over movies. Now I hope nobody will judge me for adding a reread here because common guys… a book is a book and it takes the same time whether you’re reading it for the first or tenth time, okay?

June

  • A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder (Series | 3/3 books) – Holly Jackson
  • To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (Series | 2/3 books) – Jenny Han

Now don’t ask me how come I didn’t touch any books for four months straight. Even if you asked me I wouldn’t know why lol but yeah, I must’ve had my reasons. So my fondness with reading series grew deeper in June when I picked up  AGGGTM to read. I had no idea these two had their sequels until after I finished reading them but nevertheless, they made me write my first ever book review on my blog.

July

  • Always and Forever, Lara Jean (TATBILB book 3) – Jenny Han
  • Even If These Tears Disappear Tonight – Ichijo Misaki

Even If These Tears Disappear Tonight will be one of my top 5 reads of the year. If I hadn’t read this book I would forever be living with grief that its prequel gave me in 2023. Both books were heartbreakingly beautiful and made me cry rivers. On the other hand, I was very disappointed by the final book of To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before series. I just don’t understand what was the point of it when the story had already had a good conclusion.

August – September | Twisted series (4/4 books) – Ana Huang

I love Ana Huang’s writing style. She knows how to keep a reader hooked from the very first page and I enjoyed reading all the four books from the Twisted series. I’m not sure but I guess it was my first time reading dual POV and dude… that was just so much fun.

October

  • The Little Prince – Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
  • Before the Coffee Gets Cold – Toshikazu Kawaguchi
  • Happy Place – Emily Henry
  • Better Than The Movies – Lynn Painter
  • The Silent Patient – Alex Michaelides

I had a great reading month in October. Though Happy Place was quite a disappointment, Before the Coffee Gets Cold and The Silent Patient made it up to me.

November | Shatter Me (Series | 6/6 books +  5/5 novellas) – Tahereh Mafi

Hands down the best series I read in 2024. I basically devoured all the books in like 10 days. I had never pulled an all-nighter for a book before but for Tahereh Mafi, I just had to.

December

  • Once Upon a Broken Heart (Series | 3/3 books) – Stephanie Garber
  • I Hope This Doesn’t Find You – Ann Liang

Once Upon a Broken Heart grew my fondness for fantasy novels. The chemistry between Evangeline and Jacks was just too good and when I finished the series, it felt like coming back home from a long journey. I picked up I Hope This Doesn’t Find You by ….. for my final read of the year and it was just perfect. I finished the whole book wrapped up in my blankets comfortably, giggling, relating to the characters and not getting bored once. Much recommended if you want a light and cozy rom-com to read.

So did I achieve my reading goals?

YES! My goal (that I set in October) was to finish 25 books, but at the end of the year, I had 32 books read, so that was quite a surprise for me. I was still a little upset about totally ruining my End-of-Year TBR (I had picked up 9 books out of which I only read two, lol) but I’m okay with it now because I was able to read many more than those few selected books. I will try to get through them this year, and also, I’m not making any more TBR lists from now on because I’ve accepted that I will only read what I feel like at a particular moment, no matter what the next book in my TBR is. So here’s to luck and picking up books randomly!

What are you reading currently? Have you set a reading goal for 2025 yet?

Mine is to read 40 books this year and I’m on my third one as of today (Jan 14). Can’t wait to hear from you in the comments!

I agree the a re-read counts because reading is reading at the end of the day, no matter what it is. I own quite a lot of the books you’ve mentioned or have them rented out from the library but I’m either yet to read them or I started them and then got distracted (To all the boys I’ve loved before). Congrats on achieving your goal!! I’m currently reading Every Word A Lie by Sue Wallman and The Babysitters Club graphic novels, Every word a lie is lagging a bit but I’m loving the graphic novels! What was the last book you picked up? 📚💗

      Yes exactly!!
Ooh seems like we have pretty similar taste in books then! 💗
Thanks Lucy! What’s your reading goal for 2025?
Oh graphic novels! Nice!! I would like to read some too!
I just finished Everything We Never Said by Sloan Harlow yesterday. It was good, somewhere between 3 to 4 stars for me haha 💌

So far I don’t have a total I’d like to read for 2025 but I’d love to take part in a reading challenge! I see bloggers mentioning them and they sound so fun. Ahh I haven’t heard of that one before, I’ll have to look it up! ✨️📚

I only set a reading goal in October last year and it was quite fun hehe (though I read close to nothing from my end-of-year tbr lol)
Yeah it was a decent read for me. Let me know if you ever pick it up in future!

Ughhh it’s the most disappointing thing ever when a later/last book in a series kind of throws off the happily ever after 😭💕 If an author isn’t able to one up themselves, please don’t write another book in the series haha
SO glad you found a lot of amazing books to read throughout the year!! 🥳👏 I want to have the same philosophy you shared at the end of the post: to enjoy whatever book I’d like to next, regardless of my TBR! If I make a goal I want it to be fun, and not just do it because I set the goal. 🤣
Right now I’m reading a creative problem solving book lol (it’s at home and I forgot the name), and a mystery called ‘The Call of the Loon’! I haven’t read as much recently because of my headaches 🥲 I think I need glasses haha.

Totally agree with you, Maggie! Like what’s the point seriously!? Everyone was happy with that ending, why put unnecessary drama at the end just to disappoint?

      Thanks Maggie 🩷
And exactly lol 😂 There’s no fun in reading if you’re just doing it for the sake of reaching a number.
A problem solving book huh? Sounds interesting lol
I want to read a nice mystery too. The last book I read had just a tiny bit of thriller in it so I’m looking for something powerful now 😁
Girl… I mostly read ebooks and I started having these headaches last year because of spending too much time on screen so i started wearing glasses whenever I’m on my computer or phone for long

Idk why they want to write a series if they don’t even have adequate inspiration 😂💕
Yeah haha! The book’s called ‘Creative Acts for Curious People.’ The first few chapters confused me lol so we’ll see if I end up liking it…
Oof! Glad you have some glasses to wear. I tried my mom’s reading glasses on and it made it where I could hold my phone REALLY close to my face and easily read the text 🤣 it was like wearing a magnifying glass hahah!

The name is enough to make me curious about it lol Let me know how’s it after you’ve finished reading.
I can’t put on my mom’s glasses for longer than 2 seconds lol 😂 it makes my head spin 😂😂

Oh dear 🤣 yeah I have that with my brother’s prescription glasses, they make my eyes hurt REAL bad. The readers don’t do that tho

Don’t think too much about it sis. I’m just gonna read at my own pace this year, whether it takes me months to finish one book or just a day. If we can read 40, that’s great, if not then who cares lol 😆

You’re welcome! Fable is so much better really. My favorite thing there is the rating system how we also get the .5, .25 and .75 options.
Hehe yeah dude I told all my friends about it 😂😂 I think I’m gonna reread the series this year. I loved it so much!

Wow, 32 books is seriously impressive! I can barely get through one without getting distracted lol. Also, can totally relate to the whole “no more TBR lists” thing—sometimes you just gotta go with the flow. Anyway, I was reading this while waiting for the garage door guys to finish their work, and now I’m kind of inspired to pick up a new book myself! Maybe I’ll give that Shatter Me series a try. 👀📚
