Why You Shouldn’t Force Anyone to Follow Your Blog

We make many mistakes as new bloggers. It’s not that making mistakes is something wrong, we all do that but it’s important to correct those mistakes and take care that we don’t repeat those mistakes. When we’re new to the blogging world, we actually don’t know whether what we’re doing is right or not.

(Note: I’m not an expert at blogging. All the things I’m gonna write here will be based on my experiences and my opinions. I don’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings through this. It’s just a piece of advice I want to share)

Asking someone directly to follow your blog is one of those biggest mistakes new bloggers often make. I’m not talking about when we write at the end of our posts, “Don’t forget to follow my blog”. No, not that! It’s okay to ask someone to check out your blog in the posts like “Promote Your Blog Here”, I made that post for others to promote their blog. I’m talking about when you comment on random posts- “Please follow my blog” without even reading their content or when you reply to any comments on your blog and ask them directly to follow your blog. Today, I’m gonna point out the reasons why you shouldn’t force someone to follow your blog and what you can do instead.

It doesn’t leave a nice impression

Just think about it. You just clicked on someone’s post and leave this comment- “Please, follow my blog.” How would anyone who sees that comment will react? First of all, the owner of that blog post will feel disappointed that you didn’t even care to read the post. It will clearly show that you just want to promote your blog and gain followers… nothing else.

It is annoying actually

All bloggers work hard to make their content. We just want to share our words with our readers. After publishing a post, we’re always excited for our readers’ feedback and comments. You worked so hard to write, edit, and everything… but how would you feel if someone just wants to use your comment section to promote his/her blog? It’s not hard to find out who has actually read your post and who is just faking by liking your post and leaving this comment- “Nice! Please follow my blog”. Tell me how would you feel if anyone does that?

Even if you make them follow your blog, they won’t care

We’re not running for followers, we want readers- not bots. Even if you succeeded and they followed your blog after you asked them like that, do you think they will show interest in your posts? You know that they didn’t follow your blog on their own, they just did it because you asked… forced them to do so. This way you will gain followers but not readers.

Now I hope you understand why spamming comments like this is rude and bloggers shouldn’t do that. So what we can do instead of it? Continue reading…

Make friends

Blogging is all about community. People here are all so supportive. Making blogging friends is the best part of it. Your friends will be your support and keep you up in the journey. When you are friends with someone, it ain’t rude to ask them something. If you’ve published a new post, you can ask your blogging friends casually to read it. Well, you won’t even have to do that because I’ve found myself searching for my friends’ names in the WP Reader to check if they have published a new post.

Support Others

If you expect support from others, you must support them as well. And honestly, it’s not fun at all blogging alone. Read other bloggers’ posts, leave genuine comments and share how you found their posts entertaining or relatable. Bloggers feel the happiest when they get nice and honest feedback; it makes a special bond between the blogger and the reader. They will make sure to check out your blog too, I guarantee. Don’t take it as something like you must like the posts in your Reader and support others like this… NO! It’s about interacting with others to create a friendly environment. Blogging is no fun without the community and your blogging friends.

Feel free to share your thoughts in the comment section!

I genuinely agree to all the points that you’ve mentioned here. I had been writing on miraquill application since feb 2020, which was before I started my blog. It is an amazing community of writers, however, sometimes some users comment regularly on our posts asking us to follow them. I have felt so bad when they did that, bcoz I have seen that they copy and paste their comments in almost every post of my fellow writers as well.

Please keep writing similar posts as they are very much relevant to the blogging world.

The same thing has been happening to me too. I was planning on writing a rant post about that. There is a crop of new bloggers out there who think it’s perfect okay to leave a comment like “I’m new to WP. Follow my blog”. It’s rude and downright annoying. It’s like they didn’t even read the post. I’ve got one another person who told me to follow her so that she can follow me back! I told her that she should follow my blog if she’s interested and that I’m not interested in a follow for follow! I’ve got another one who’s spamming many of my posts by leaving links to their blog! These days, I send them directly to the spam folder

🙂 Thankfully, I never made the mistake of begging other bloggers to follow my blog when I first started blogging.

Besides, comments should be based on the topic that was published.

I grew tired of people asking me to follow their blog; which is why I chose to manually approve comments (That method works for me).

yes yes yes YES! 100% agree. You should NEVER force anyone to follow or leave spammy comments asking for a follow back. Doing that won’t get the genuine & authentic community you want. And people will just follow without any interaction. You might as well just buy followers at that point. It’s kind of like Instagram and how some people do those follow loops or #followforfollow. Kind of pointless lol
